Gangaur is one of the most colourful and the most important festival of Rajasthan and especially Mewar. The word ‘Gangaur’ is made up of two words, ‘Gana’ and ‘Gaur’. ‘Gana’ is a synonym for Lord Shiva and ‘Gaur’ which stands for Gauri or Parvati, wife of Lord Shiva.

Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva are worshipped in this festival. This festival is specifically meant for women. The unmarried women worship Gauri in order to get good husband by blessings of her, while married women do so for the happy, healthy and long life of their husbands.

It is believed that on this day Shiva and Gauri, reunited after an ordination. The small doll like Idols of the Shiva and Gauri made of wood are worshipped. These divine male and female entities are named ‘Isar’ and ‘Gangaur’. Ornaments made by flour are devoted to Isar and Gangaur and various rituals are performed.
